Italian Shenanigans At Spurs

He’s got a big character, he makes some fantastic saves and he used to be a world class goal keeper. But Carlio Cudicini is fast becoming the weak link in the Spurs side and surely must now be reinstated between the sticks on a permanent basis.

Against Chelsea, Cudicini was at fault for two of the goals. For their second goal, he should have turned Drogba’s shot around the post but parried it to Lampard who crossed for Ballack to tap in. And although many blamed Corluka for being out muscled to allow Drogba to score Chelsea’s third, it looked like he was only trying to hold Drogba up to give Cudicini time to come out and collect. Cudicini niether came out or stayed on his line and it ended up being an easy tap in for the burly Ivorian.

Against Man Utd, the Giggs free kick, outstanding though it was, would have been saved by a better positioned goal keeper diving with his closest hand to the ball. Slightly more harshly maybe, I’d also say Cudicini should have saved Anderson’s goal which was very close to him.

The list goes on; Carlton Cole’s goal for the Spammers against us was barely a foot away from Cudicini’s standing position, a great goal but one that should never have gone in. Lee Bowyer’s goal for Birmingham was a total cock up on Carlo’s part. Believe it or not, I could go on.

Yes some of these goals were partly other people’s fault but enough is enough. Gomes might be erratic but he’s far more settled now than he was this time last year and was central to the good form that saw us climb the table post Christmas in ‘08-’09. He’s also a top class shot stopper and by far the best keeper currently at The Lane.

Benched for the last two games, must be wondering what Cudicini has to do to get dropped.

Could Harry Redknapp possibly disagree?

Carlo doesn’t give the back 4 confidence and it seems he is nervous and indecisive especially about coming out and claiming the ball, something which will come with an extended run in the 1st team however as you rightly point out, Gomes is our no1 and should be re-instated swiftly!

  • he may not give the back 4 confidence..but we have a back 4 with no confidence..until we have a spine to the team we will win nothing….all the best teams in the world have a settled keeper and back 4.we never have that so until we do and make sum tuff choices or fotget out it…King how ever good he was/is he does not help our situation.can you see the club giving him a contract if he cant play more that 15 games a season…time to get tuff and sort out this Problem once and for all..we are being held back as a club because of this situation

ARE YOU ON CRACK? WHAT GAME WERE YOU WATCHING? YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT FOOTBALL AND ARE JUST TRYING TO MAKE CC A SCAPEGOAT AS YOU FUCK GOMES UP THE BATTY ON A REGULAR BASIS YOU COCK.

I think you’ll find this was probably just Redknapp being smart.. no point in chucking Gomes back in at the deep end against Cheatski and have his confidence smashed just as coming back to fitness. Cudicini has had a run in the team, so keep it as it is. Gomes can come back for the Preston game, hopefully keep a clean sheet or at least not get battered… then our league run of games following should allow a few better results than those against Utd / Cheatski.. Good shout i think.

Couldn’t agree more about Cudicini, he is second rate. He has spent so much time on the bench at Chelsea and Spurs no matter what qualities he has without any game time experience he doesn’t have the decision making abilities any more for the premiership. If given a run of games he may improve but we simply can not afford that and have in my opinion one of the best keepers in the pl in Gomes.

Simpy compare his save from a Giggs Free kick last year at the lane which came over the wall on and Gomes saved it quite comfortably. Cudicini conceded on his own side of the Goal. Unforgiveable for a keeper even if it was a Ronaldo thunderbolt!

Redknapp will re-instate Gomes and had probably never intended to drop him back in the side away to Chelsea where his confidence could have taken a hammering!

COYS the future (particularily in the next 5 games) is very bright!

Agree that Carlo has looked a bit shaky, especially in his decision making, But we need to have a settled back 4. Agree with the poster that it’s time to get tough, if we want to be one of the teams to break the “top 4″ we need an experienced, settled back 4.
Sadly we’re not going to get that with Leds and Woody coming in and out of the team

I could not agree more except for the fact that he could’ve saved Rooney’s nutmeg as well. Cudicini looks like he’s in quicksand, has no mobility and he hands look shaky. Giggs goal, what are you doing standing on the side of the wall? Drogba’s goal could’ve easily been held or pushed aside. The only goal he could not have saved was Cole’s header…Simply put, Gomes when healthy should start.

Why’s he the weak link? what mistakes has he made? A a keeper myself i can assure you that good nutmegs are as good as impossible to save. drog’s goal he had no chance with cos the defender deflected the ball round him. he’s also looked far more confident with crosses than gomes ever does.

  • SPOT ON, He has let som shocking goals in and you are right about him using is wrong hand for giggs free kick .Another goaly that does this is robbo and cudicini is the same goaly a shot stopper full stop thats why chelsea replaced him .This lighter ball has made this type of goaly redundent you need to be big and commanding .hI will bet any money all them goals would have bean saved at the other end .H e hasent featured in a shut out in any game but GOMES has big mistake playing cud in both games and Harry needs to have a word with both corluka and ekotto both have sipped in there form badly.

  • DAVSPURS again just asking if Yid KING is the mafia cudicini is world class if you are just prince trying to be a King fuck off hei crap and chelski gave him a silver plate for sitting on the bech for so long and he gave that other smach head skelator drugba a goal and chelski 3the first player to be strechered of for cramp pricless or dodgy energy ?

I’m a keeper too, I play for the reserves of a league 2 team (not great i know but better than most of you lot!).

The article is defo right on the Giggs freekick and I’d agree on the drogba goal too. But the nutmug wasn’t his fault.

Overall, Cudicini shows all of the signs of a keeper out of form to me. Pleased to see gomes is back in for tonight.

  • george

the fault at chelsea was the lack of first team players, the injuries on the pitch and the poor play. cudicini is a class goalkeeper and i remember a fantastic save where he recovered to push the ball away from goal around the post. gomes IS better however. he used to be a bit clumsy but now he has recovered. who really wants to sell cudicini as a second keeper to get another? lets keep him for backup and support gomes and our football club. we must be the only club whose fans always find something to moan about!

  • [...] More Italian Shenanigans At Spurs Last week I wrote here on Tottenham Blog that there was no way Carlo Cudicini should be allowed to continue between the sticks for Spurs after gifting goals in consecutive matches to Chelsea, Man Utd, Birmingham and West Ham. I thought [...]
