Poll: Should Robbie Keane be sold? Dropped? Or persevered with?

This isn’t a knee jerk reaction following yesterday’s match. Robbie Keane has, as far as I am concerned and barring the 4 goals against Burnley, been pap for the entirety of this season.

Here are his stats for the season so far:

Robbie Keane stats

Take out the Burnley match and he has two goals from 16 starts in the league. And it’s not as though he hasn’t had chances, he’s missing sitters in every game.

Most obvious common denominator in the matches against Hull, Stoke and Wolves? Robbie Keane starting up front.

It seems clear to me that Keane should at least be relegated down the pecking order behind the likes of Pav and Gio Dos Santos. And the only reason I say that  is the fabled bubbliness in the dressing room.

But then, if we just drop him long term, where does that leave our striking options? Pav and Crouch would probably not be the perfect partnership. And Gio may or may not do it. Yes Pav will probably be sold this window but stories in the press would suggest that his transfer fee has been earmarked for other areas of the squad. If we don’t sell Keane, we won’t be able to bring another forward in to replace him.

So what do you think? Vote in the poll (on the right hand side of the page) and discuss in the comments below. Are there any Spurs fans out there who actually think we should persevere with him? I say sell him.

I still believe Robbie is important for us. I am still not sure if Crouch is the answer, i wasnt happy when he signed for us, but he does work well with Defoe. If we were to sell Robbie it would have to be for a lot of money, although not the amount Harry is talking about(£50 million). Robbie brings to much to the team in the dressing room, and he would be missed. I still think he has something to give on the pitch, although he is not doing it at the moment. If he scored in our next two games, all thoughts of selling him would dissapear.

Keane was great playing alongside Berbatov before he went to Liverpool but it is a different set up now. His reflex has become slow. This is why he misses great goal-scoring opportunities. He is not the same anymore since his return from Liverpool, the team of his childhood he had always wanted to play for but rejected him. I wonder if this has not affected him psychologically because he is not the same sharp striker he once was.

Wow – talk about biased. Relegated behind Pav (who scored 5 goals all last season) and GDS who has scored 0 league goals ever and looks cack everytime he comes on? You’re nuts.

At the moment he shoud be joint second choice with Crouch depending on the game. He looked better than Defoe on Saturday (Defoe might as well have been sitting in the stands for all the involvement he had) and no worse than Crouch.

Honestly, some of our ’supporters’ baffle me. They spend more time trying to drag down a Spurs legend than they do supporting their team.

  • TonyTott

To Matt: We are not trying to bring a Legend down – there is a time when a legend is no longer a legend on the pitch. That time has come. 6 goals out of 17 starts is not a bad tally – but he scored 4 in one match which makes you think ‘what does he do?’. Pre-Liverpool Keane was fantastic. He is broken now. Not sure how or why…

  • TonyTott

In short, the question isn’t whether we should sell, drop or persist with him – it is why did we re-sign him in the first place? I didn’t want him. We got 20 million out of him and could have gone for someone fresh. Most players who return are not as good as their first time.

  • Matt

To TonyTott: Despite what you say, Keane has made a great difference since he came back from Liverpool. His performances on the pitch have been up and down (early in the season he was very good, since being dropped for Crouch he has been more patchy) but his general influence around the club and on the squad can’t be measured (Harry himself has said this umpteen times). Him and Palacios are the reason why we started pulling clear of trouble last season and they both have had a big influence on us chasing 4th this season.

Also in regard to the 4 goals in one game comement, Defoe scored 8 of his goals in 2 games (against possibly the two crappest defences I have ever witnessed) does that mean we should discount those as well?

Keane brought more to the team on Saturday than Defoe did (they both missed sitters but Keane was more involved generally). Defoe won’t get taken off because he is Harry’s favourite and doesn’t get all the abuse and these kind of nonsense blog posts from our supporters because they have become brainwashed with all this ‘he’s a yiddo’ nonsense.

And anyone who says that Pav or GDS represent a better option in a tight premiership game needs their head examined.

to me it just seems like the team has moved on and left Robbie behind.

Since the “glory days” with a Keane & Berbatov partnership, we have seen a lot of change and a lot of new faces. Kranjcar, Modric, Palacios, Defoe & Crouch have all been brought in and breathed new life in to Spurs after the disruptive summer when Berba & Keane were sold. Add Gomes, Corluka & Bassong to that and the fact that Huddlestone now plays every game and Lennon is a far better player now and you can see we are a very different Spurs to 18-24 months ago when Keane was the linchpin of our team.

For me, Keane looks like he has lost his legs a bit. Never that quick, he now appears to be stumbling to catch the ball up and his clever movement and deft touches are far less effective with Defoe as a partner, who works better chasing flick-ons and through balls. Keane could and should have scored 2 but was denied by 2 fantastic saves. Would that have papered over the cracks?

Conclusions: Worth keeping for the the rest of the season. Review in the summer.

I LIKE ROBBIE KEANE IN FULL CONFIDENCE KEANE IS CLASS.BUT I EVERY TIME I SEE HIM ON THE TEAM SHIT I THINK SHIT THAT COULD BE ARSHAVIN, WAGNER LOVE, SOMEONE A BIT MORE DYNAMIC. WE GOT 20 MILL 4 HIM.AND HELP SAVE US FROM PROBLEMS LAST YEAR AND HE’S GOOD FOR THE DRESSING ROOM YEAH,BUT GIVE LUKA OR SOMEONE A CHANCE TO WAVE HIS FIST AROUND IN THE CHANGING ROOM.I SEE KEANE AS A RELIC FROM THE JOL , MALBRANC,CHIMBONDA,TAINO,BERBATOV ERA.

  • TonyTott

To Matt: I certainly do not disagree with your Defoe comment. His goalscoring record is incredibly suspect. And I agree with your GDS comment. Pav – I am not sure he has had a fair chance as his reputation deserves – but from what I have heard from those who go to games regularly, he was not cutting it. GDS should get a loan more within premiership so that we can see if he can do anything. I am prepared to persue with Keane, but would like to see more of what he used to do. I do admit that he was unlucky on Saturday – if he had scored, none of this moaning would be going on today

should never have taken him back from Liverfluke

This is not the first time that Spurs have missed out on something i believe would of been great. When we signed Rebrov everyone was in a dreamworld, but he failed. I believe that had we of gone out and got Shevchencho at the same time, who knows we may even of won the league, but we didnt. Poor old Pav, he has failed, but had we of spent more and signed Arshavin when we had the chance, we wouldnt even be talking about Defoe, Crouch and Keane. Rebrov and Pav, have failed for two reasons, we didnt have the balls to spend on their strike partners, and they havnt been given the chance.

  • natrugby

this my last moan,at the start of season we started with 4 top class strickers, only 3 has been used yet we have failed to score in games where we have had chances, how can we justify that with a world class stricker sitting on the bench, i almost can understand why he needs to leave, he was on fire pre-season, last but not least people say ‘what about work rate’ but if you look at those games against stoke wolves & hull it wasn’t work rate that f*cked us it was a lack of a goal scorer

  • chris

Keane was brought in for a purpose and served that purpose well. Been very dissapointing this season and has had sufficient chances to prove himself. Adds a slightly different dimension to our play and without doubt is a strong voice in the dressing room but we need to be ruthless in our quest for 4th place and need to pick up wins against teams like Wolves, stoke and Hull. If keane cant create the chances or add the finishin touch then some1 else should be given a chance. time for a change and a new challenge for keano – elsewhere im afraid though! We need a strike partnership that is effective in every game.

  • Brycie

Thats what you get for being a smart arse and organising a jaunt to Dublin on the QT well done Keano you knob!!!!!
