Redknapp explains Keane and Hutton departures – Both still have Spurs futures

Here’s Harry Redknapp speaking to BBC radio earlier today about the surprising outgoing loan deals which saw Robbie Keane join Celtic and Alan Hutton head for Sunderland.

On Robbie Keane:

“It’s the one club he’d go to, he wants to play, the last few weeks he’s not started as many games as he would have liked, the opportunity to go and play at Celtic is something he’d love to go and do.

“He’s a great character, we’ll miss him. He’s not only a fantastic player, he’s great around the dressing room, a great trainer. It’s just that Crouch and Defoe have been doing great and scoring goals and Robbie suddenly has found himself coming on or starting sometimes but not playing regularly and the chance to go and play at Celtic was something that appealed to him.

“He’s started a few, he’s taken part in almost every game, but he’s too big a player not to be starting every game, he finds it difficult not to be in the starting line up, that’s the problem with Robbie.

“He’s just been unlucky with Crouch and Defoe being in such good form and I’ve also got Pavlyuchenko and we’ve brought in Eidur Gudjohnsen, he’s just not a happy fella if he’s not starting and that’s the problem.

“I don’t know if the deal will become permanent, I doubt it very much, he’ll probably be back with us next season. It’s a loan deal, lets take it from there and see how we go.

On Alan Hutton:

“Alan is a terrific attacking right back, he gets forward great. The other lad Corluka has done great, Alan had an injury when I first came and the other lads have done great so it’s been difficult for him to get a regular starting place. I’m sure he’ll do well at Sunderland and I’m sure he’ll be back next season and it’ll be difficult for anyone to keep him out of the team.”

  • KEANO COMING BACK NEXT SEASON, noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • Stroller

Eh ? Keane’s great…Hutton’s great, Crouch and Defoe are great, Corluka’s done great. So what’s not great then Harry ?

  • Tom

I guess he has to say they’re great to keep the potential future buyers interested.

I don’t understand how anyone could say that Hutton is great, ad infinitum, though.

  • Brycie

Thats what you get for being a smart arse and organising a jaunt to Dublin on the QT well done Keano you knob!!!!!

  • Brycie

Come on he will not be missed that much!!!!

  • Spurssince80

Well lads, I am amazed there isn’t a party going on……ye all got yer wish….Keano is gone. For loan read, with option to buy at end of season cos ‘Arry conveniently let slip that Keano loves Celtic just to really piss off any remaining Spurs Keano fans. It’s a disgrace. Draw at Birmingham with his favourites playing and then he sends Keano to Celtic….bye bye 4th…..

  • Paul

I sure hope keano comes back with some form, he is a fantastic player. The keano from before benitez ruined him is what we are missing, we would have beaten hull, stoke, wolves with the old keano

we will never get anywhere with crouch and defoe, whats the point with playing a big man who cant head it on very well, with someone who when he does, is offside?

Keano plays at his best when he is loved, which is why you should support him, not abuse him every week, some of the things fans say at games just doesnt help. He made a mistake leaving for liverpool, but the fans must move on, who cares, everyone makes mistakes, its not like he went to arsenal on a free!

Also, Keano back in spurs colours for 38 games, in which we got 70 points, usually top four spot. Without him about the place, i will be very surprised if villa, liverpool and man city dont all finish above us.

  • ndg71

Well you finally got your wish keano haters didnt you…
Keane is and will always be a legend, the guy has scored over 100 goals for us and yet you bloody bloggers moan moan moan because his hit a bit of bad form. Your the same arseholes who say give pav a chance , give gio a go blah blah…there is a reason we are 4th because arry chooses players who have the desire to wear the shirt not just collect cash like the shit weve had over the years. good luck keano and thanks

  • j

shame he couldnt take jermaine anus with him as well! A kinda you loan one you get one free..forever! Worried about our lack of options at right back thou! Think naughton should of stayed and hutton is rubbish anyway so glad he has gone! Im shocked we didnt buy a back up keeper or a dcm thou!

  • stuart

    what a sad day
Arry needs his head examined yhe sooner he s arrested for all his dodgy deals with his beloved pompey and spends some time in the nick the better…
    mid table here we come

  • Micko

I pretty much wept when he left for lpool. Everyone knew he’d end up at Celtic one day and I for one am glad to see it happen, just not so soon… Problem is that Celtic already love him and he’ll get the weekly support he needs for top form regardless – The kind of support spurs fans seem to have a real issue with – ie blasting mildly underperforming players while ignoring all past acheivements and potential form so as to give the player more difficulty in returning to form.
Seems to me that if you know how good a player can be, having reached iconic status at that club, you should not berate the player unless you truly believe that player doesn’t care for the club or the win anymore, and if anyone says that of keano then they haven’t seen him play.
We all knew how good he could be – having been there before and having had a great scoring record for consecutive seasons.
we all know he was only enticed away by a fav boyhood club (Liverpool)- whom, with Celtic, he had admitted to loving very early in his career.
We all now he plays best with the full support of the club and fans.
    But would do we do?
It’s sabotage and I would rather chant criticism at those supporters criticising keano’s every move then join them.
It makes me think they don’t know anything about the game, club and players, and this being the case, should keep their undeveloped ideas on football to their management simulators.
Even amongst the sea of critical bloggers crying to sell him, ridiculous chanting and negative support (you see, it’s an oxymoron) and a plethora of reportedly interested parties, as ‘arry says Celtic were the only club he’d go to.
Despite the fluctuating support of the tottenham support, keano loves us, and we should have loved him more.

  • abe

Keane was certainly beaming when he was showed off. I will be amazed if he is not a success. The Sottish league is really a bit league in terms of quality and while Keane has not been great, he is still Premiership quality. Hopefully he does well, gets his confidence back and then comes to Spurs next season – and can perform.
Micko – what you describe is life. You focus on your performances today, not the past. yes, there is no need to berate etc but if he is not performing, you cannot play him. Besides his performances, his body language when he did play was all wrong. I think the whole Liverpool incident changed him quite a bit.

  • I8Arsenal

What a blow, forget 4th, lets just hope we can get into europe next season! Robbie will be badly missed, i dont care what anybody says, he is the engine in the dressing room and in training, wait till we are at half time losing 2-0, who have we got to gee the players up. crouch is not good enough, defoe couldnt hit a barn door at the moment. Then there is hutton, ive got a feeling Harry has shot himself in the foot, Corluka isnt playing well. I am surprised at Bentleys form, but he wont keep Lennon out, hurry up back aaron, were lost without you.

  • Shannon

Is Crouch great too? I don’t think so!

  • Maybe Juande

Benitez didnt ruin Keane. Berbatov going to Manure ruined Keane. The player that complimented him was gone, the player on the same visionary level had gone, the player that drew the defenders away from Keane had gone.

Keane was on the slide to mediocrity a year or so before Berb came to spurs and was lots of paper talk about his future then. I am afraid that if he thinks he is at his peak now then he is sadly 2 years past that.

So off to the retirement home north of the border. See you managing Leyton Orient in a couple of years Keano. Thanks for the victory jigs x

  • Chris

This could be a big mistake. I know he hasn’t been at his best this year but he still has something to offer. Him going just makes Defoe untouchable and the others will have to take it in turns. Keane was a different option and I am gutted he’s gone!!

  • Andy

I believe a couple of previous posts have nailed this one firmly on the head. Keane had his best years at Spurs, up to the season prior to departing to Liverpool. His turn of speed was starting to desert him, which he used so well to create that extra yard with his quick feet. I was amazed Liverpool were prepared to pay £20m, as I knew his better days were behind him. If it were not for Levy dragging the last £M out of United for Berbatov and then having no time for a replacement, Keane would not have returned. I also believe that Bellamy was Redknapp’s 1st choice, but Duxbury the cock would not sell to Spurs.

Problem with us is we have too many fans who think they know better than the manager. Sometimes we are right (who wanted Jenas brought on v Birmingham?) but more often we haven’t got a clue. We can’t see what goes on in the training ground and dressing room, can we? I’m a season ticket holder and sometimes can’t believe the comments from the know it alls in the crowd – slagging players off for the most minor errors. This mentality translates itself throughout the stands and hence, so much negativity. It’s a self fulfilling prophesy – how easy can it be to play when so many in the crowd are expecting the worst? Spurs fans are some of the best in the Prem, but we are also some of the worst when the chips are down. If Man Utd are losing 1-0, their fans EXPECT them to turn things around and go on and win the game. With Spurs fans it’s more a case of “here we go again”. Our players, and more importantly, the opposition players pick up on that. So, come on people, let’s get fully behind our team and see where that takes us.

  • Jima

    Stuart – you’re a door knob

  • Dominic

I don’t think it’s bad loan or deals during this windows
Gudjohnsen – he can play just behind the strikers and Harry tried Keane in this position a few times and did not work out well. Keano is not the same player who left for Liverpool when he came back. I personally think this would benefit Pav as he’s a good skillful play compared to Crouch and Harry should try with Modders on the left Lennon/Bentley on right with Pav and Defoe up front and Gudjohnsen just behind them. Since Palocious works hard as a defensive midfielder we might not miss Hudders that much. To finish fourth the more important thing is to beat lesser teams rather than draw or lose, this kind of formation might work againt teams like these.

In terms of Hutton and Naughton loaned out we got Walker back from loan so he will be a ready made sub for Corluka. Karboul could provicd cover for the 2 centre backs as Ledley and woodgate are very injury prone

    Only time will tell

Couple of things. Fans have every right to make their comments known whether on the internet, in a pub or in a discussion at work. My only expectation is that the fans actually watch or listen to the match before expressing opinions and that opinions remain football related. Personal attacks against players, or other posters for that matter, are always unacceptable. I, too, believe that it is totally counterproductive to criticize the players or the team during a match. The fans at the stadium are supposed to be the 12th man and should be doing everything to pick the lads up as is possible. Only exception is the Manager. Tactics often decide games and managers ought to be applauded and jeered for what they do. Comes with the territory and should be saved for the end of the match. If Harry asks Defoe to take the next spot kick, what to do? Clearly booing Defoe will never help, so get behind the lad, but when it goes down as history suggests it will go down, feel free to have a good verbal go at Harry – not personal, not profanity laden, but have a go. Jol understood all this and made himself the centre of attention, thereby deflecting away from the players. Harry singles players out and seems to love having his players run off to every press outlet to explain why we are so much better than Pool, and Chelsea, and ManU and Arsenal a day before we get our butts handed to us. He is a poor manager of men. A manager’s job is to get the best out of the players he’s got. Has he truly done that for Pav, Bentley, Gio and so many more. Leaving someone off the bench for a few weeks is a punishment. Leaving them out in the cold for months is a grudge. Problem with ‘Arry is his ego is bigger than his players. As to Keane, his best days are behind him and it’s clear for everyone to see. Is he a legend. Of course, but so is Jimmy Greaves, but we’re not bringing him back are we? Games no longer are affected by Keane, so even as a super-sub, he just doesn’t fit the role. Perhaps he can find his game again at Celtic, though I doubt it, as it’s pace and desire that seem to have left him. We’ll see though. At any event, 5 strikers must be seen as unworkable, if ‘Arry thinks four is too many. Someone had to go and I would even suggest that 2 had to go. COYS

  • Gaz

I actually think this could be a masterstroke by Redknapp. He is obviously not playing at his best at the moment. Loaning him out to Celtic (one of only two clubs he said he would ever leave spurs for), where he is almost guaranteed regular first team football against weaker opposition could revitalise him and get him back to his goal scoring best. “What about Liverpool” I hear you cry, well, I think it was too much for him – Liverpool are a massive club expected to win every game. This with the added pressure of playing for his childhood team seemed to take it’s toll.

If he does not play to his best in the SPL, then that gives Harry the option to let them keep him. If on the other hand he gets back to what we know he is capable of then we’ll have him back thank you very much!!!

    Good luck Keano!

  • Paul

    Maybe Juande,

May I just point out that keano scored 16 league goals the year BEFORE berbatov joined, more than in either of the 2 seasons berba was here. He didnt score any more with berba here. If that is a slide what do you think of defoe? he has never scored that many, was he on his way to non-league footy before this season? I sense you are just bitter about keano leaving for liverpool, but who can blame him, we will never get top 4 or any success with fans like yourself, we dont need to sign more players, we need to sign new fans!

    Keano is a legend!!

  • peter

Funny, I remember when we got Hutton, some guy in Scotland 9a rangers fan I think) was laughing, saying they were glad 2 see the back of him – bet he is in stitches now, oh how he has been proved right …. As for Keane, good luck but don’t come back – you will love playing =2 Championship football coz that’s all you have ever been good 4 – you always looked good at Spurs in an adv team, now we are just above adv, we can see what crap you really r … Mind you look at Celtic, once a top team then take a manager who’s only success was … was … was …. and make him manager of your team … Shows he don’t know what 2 do by taking our 3rd/4th placed rubbish striker … another manager 4 the chop then … Now if we could get rid of Redknap as well – Any takers ??? (and no I’m not kidding) never was any more than a mediocre manager and never will be any more than that…

  • kols

for crying out loud!!!! keane is not getting better, he is slowly getting worse. he is getting older, that`s it. and now we have 3 strikers, and on new midfilde`r\striker(gudjonson). and now maybe pav can get a chance to play. i think if keane is so great in the dressing room, wonder who he will be in there when he is not happy. he must be just as prominet then, just negative. if keane proves me wrong i will be happy. and HR is not a great manager, going out in the paper`s saying this and that about certain players??? you do not see old red nose doing that, or wenger. if as some of you on here say, we should stop complaining about players. should not HARRY REDKNAPP do the same??????????????? he is the manager, he is the man our player`s expect to suport them in the media!! not hanging them out. so start at the top, start with HARRY, and maybe we can get that 4th spot. so dont make this the suporters foult, they hear us once, maybe two times a week. they hear harry every day! godbye, kols of norway.

  • I would agree that Keano seems to have a lost a yard but maybe not because he’s past his best but mainly coz he’s not playing regularly to retain sharpness. Our manager fancies Crouch and Defoe and noted JD does seem to allow himself to get offside a little too much surely we should be getting behind those players at Spurs – what’s done is done. Keano may or may not come back – his stint at Liverpool has definitely blighted his career but hopefully regular footie north of the border will bring that spring in his step – I am a Keano fan and believe he is much better than he is showing right now.

Hutton going to Sunderland isn’t necessary a bad thing for the player again if the manager doesn’t fancy him full time – let him play so we can get some money for him when somebody does come in for him.

As to the boys on the pitch and our manager – lets get behind them and see if we can overcome Leeds Utd in the Cup and keep our push for 4th on course. Remember we’ve got Villa at home and Man City away so it’s definitely in our hands people. What would you say to Gudjohnsen popping up with winning goals against those two teams? Not much I’d reckon.

The only thing I couldn’t get my head around was why we did not try for Babel loan or permanent – a winger with pace in abundance and going no where at Liverpool? Anyone got any thoughts on this one?

    COME ON YOU SPURS!

  • Yid at work

NDG 71…You tool. Robbie Keane prior to going to Liverpool said that he wanted to remain at Spurs it was his spiritual home he wanted to end his career with us… 2 months later Liverpool come in and he’s off like a rat of a sinking ship.. What does he say ? I’ve always wanted to play for Liverpool my boyhood hero’s I’ve come to my spiritual home… Cant get a game then comes back to Spurs tail between his legs.. Back to his spiritual home no doubt ! NO WAIT… goes on loan to Celtic the club he’s always supported his spiritual home the club he always wanted to play for…..

Blokes a Cnut and that’s why the majority of true Spurs fans are glad to see the back of him… He used us till he got a better offer once and will do it gain now playing amateur football in Scotland….

Good riddance Robbie Keane dont look back and dont come back…..
