Spurs transfer window takes shape

The good news is that Sebastien Bassong is a nailed on certainty to sign for Spurs in the next couple of days. Pace, poise, strength, positional sense and youth make him the perfect compliment to our existing options in King, Woodgate and Dawson. He’s not such an established star that he’ll bleat if he’s left on the bench now and again but he’s got enough experience and quality to make a real difference to the squad. In other words, the perfect signing for Spurs at this juncture.

The bad news is that a lot of our other targets have slipped away in recent days. Chelsea moved swiftly to quash any talk of a Spurs move for Joe Cole, Klaas Jan-Huntelaar looks set for a move to AC Milan, Vieira’s “gone all quiet”, Fabian Delph has moved to Villa, Van-Bommell never got off the ground and Moussa Sissoko would seem to have been priced out of our reach.

‘Arry spent the first half of last season banging on about balance and the lack thereof in the Spurs squad. Moving Modric out to the left and bringing Palacios in sorted the balance issue in our 1st eleven right away. With Crouch a more natural accomplice than Bent to the usual attacking suspects of Defoe/Keane, Modric and Lennon, we should be happy with our first choice team. But as the image below shows, our second eleven still needs work in terms of balance.

We have no back up left wing options other than moving Lennon across and no back up ball winner at all now that Zokora has gone.

Klaas Jan-Huntelaar is such a good player that if there was a chance of us signing him, we had to try. But don’t expect us to keep looking for a striker now that he’s slipped away. Pavlyuchenko deserves a chance to prove himself and I think he will this season.

Look out for a new wave of left wing and defensive midfield targets from now until the end of the window. I reckon they’ll be people we’ve not been linked with so far. Watch this space.

Hopefully Dos Santos gets a chance at the left wing instead of O’Hara if he doesn’t go back to Ipswich, but agree we might need back-up for Palacios. Also think Hutton should get infront of Corluka and Bale will hopefully push Ekotto this season.

  • Why are some of our fans not happy with our squad ,and dont think for one min that robbie will be sitting on the bench . He will be in jenas is place this will be the team if we sign bassong .corluka huddlestone bassong ekotoo lennon palacios moderic keane defoe croutch subs cudicini jenas pav ohara naughton hutton bentley. These are the players i would have signed sol campbell viduka beckham all could learn lennon and hudds and bale for becks bassong daws henville hudds for sol and pav defoe crouthcy keane obika for viduka to teach free kicks crossing how to hold the ball up in attack and how to defend .

  • hey why you put jenas in center mid??? thats where MODRIC should be. hes the playmaker and could push us in the top four. thats why we need to sign a left winger because modric loves to cut in the middle and be more involved with the play, and it leaves the left side isolated and wide open for the oppenents to attack. hes a CENTER MID, hes class thats just wasting him really.

  • Bassong should not sign before Monday, as he this way will serve one matchday ban (Newcastle’s game against West Bromwich) for his red card against Fulham (2 matchday bans) last season. Then he will only miss the game against Liverpool for Spurs.

Use Giovani, he can play left and theres cover at left wing, and jamie o’hara is a good ball winner he could cover palacios, but hopefully wilson never gets injured lol, I think we need a center midfielder still though with a bit of grit and height and use huddlestone and jenas as back up, but there aint too many people around who are right for tottenham, id sign an older player as a short term method and hope bostock and livermore develop, even then though i wouldnt have a clue who to go for lool….

  • Dos Santos is a left sided option as is Gareth Bale. They just need the opportunity

I agree on the Dos Santos thing, think he should be given a shot. But alas I don’t reckon ‘Arry agrees…

Jesus, how long do we have to put up with Jenas, he is a weak link in midfield, and apart from being able to run around a lot, does precious little else to warrant even a squad place. Why does everyone keep saying the likes of Dos Santos and Bale etc, need to be given a chance…Harry sees what they can offer week in week out on the training field, and if he doesn’t play them regulary, then they are surely just not good enough players, or (and I think this more likely) they are just not prepared to give the 110% thats required. If I were in their positions, I would take a leaf out of O’Hara’s book in trying to cement a regular first team place. How many of our players can be said to show the commitement and effort he does thats so refreshing to see???

  • Deano

Jenas is the reason y we will not ever make the top 4! I agree that we should tuck modric infield and have him as the attacking central midfielder and palacios as the defensive midfielder. I would then go and buy a proven left winger, so a young once, the sqaud needs experiance!! If spurs were to play modric on the left i would ALWAYS play Bale at left back (even tho hes neva won a game wid us) he just needs confidence, hes a class act really!! The reason being is so that due to modric cutting inside so often bale would prove us with the pacey skill full outlet who would hog the touchline, would provide us with a good balance, and if modric were to play on left would 100% play keano in the centre instead of jenas!!!

  • admin

Fuzzy Dunlop, agree with you. Not sure about selling Bentley but on everything else, I reckon the squad you selected is perfect.

  • admin

Jenas is a quality player who we miss when he’s not playing. Agree that it would be good to sign some real competition for him but selling him is nuts.

The key to the Jenas debate is obviously consistancy. Imagine how well Lampard’s consistancy longterm would be alongside Thudd, Michael Brown or Zokora. Jenas was far more consistant last year with Palacios, lets see if he can build on that.

  • [...] of the reason we’re signing him is to mitigate the injuries to Dawson and Woodgate. Thanks to ThailandSpurs of the Pattaya People though (we love the Thais, especially Spurs supporting ones) for pointing out [...]

  • [...] Just like we told you, Redknapp confirms that Huntelaar to AC Milan means Pavlyuchenko is staying and Spurs wont be after anymore strikers. We’re happy with that, what do you reckon? [...]

  • [...] Spurs’  squad is looking almost there. Just a few sales and one or two buys and we’ll be having a great season next year. View Poll [...]

Thanks Admin. The reason I say sell Bentley is to mainly free up money for a different winger who can comfortably play left.
If we were able to get someone in with current funds or a cheaper option then I wouldn’t be adverse to seeing Bentley stay.

  • BdaSpur

Get Gio on the left!! Bentley deserves a shot and will prove himself worthy in the Lillywhite. If Mod sits in front of wilson, any three of Azza, Bentley or Gio can switch wings all day long. We now have a squad that can change formation and still be in balance i.e. Hudds accurancy vs Jena runs at defense. Bentley with crouch to aim for or Lennon to link up with Mod/ Keane. Looking peachy. Quality back up or alongside Wilson would give us the extra dimension. COYS
